Stop Burning Trees - Day of Action against Drax
Wednesday 27 April
The Yorks and Humber Climate Justice Coalition is hosting a rally as part of the Stop Burning Trees! national day of action to mark Drax Power’s AGM.
We’ll be protesting our outrage at taxpayer money subsidizing burning trees to generate electricity by the UK”s biggest carbon emitter.
We’ll hear from speakers about the better, greener, sustainable ways in which we could produce the energy we need.
There will also be a green jobs fair at which passers by can learn about the kinds of jobs needed to create a sustainable economy.
WHY WE’RE TAKING ACTION ON THE 27TH
Drax is the world’s biggest burner of trees and the UKs single largest carbon emitter. The company’s tree burning is leading to forest destruction and huge amounts of pollution around the world, harming poorer and marginalised communities the most. Despite this, the company received £893 million in UK renewable subsidies in 2021. By 2027, the company will have received £10 billion in renewable subsidies and this money comes straight out of a surcharge on our energy bills!
The Stop Burning Trees Coalition is made up of groups including Friends Of The Earth, Biofuelwatch, Axe Drax, the Green Party, the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Coalition, XR and many more We are taking action against the destructive biomass industry and demanding that companies like Drax #StopBurningTrees!
